China has launched a new set of state-backed venture capital funds aimed at accelerating development in so-called “hard technology” sectors, including semiconductors, robotics, advanced manufacturing, and strategic materials. The initiative reflects Beijing’s renewed focus on reducing dependence on foreign technology amid rising geopolitical and trade tensions.
According to state media, the funds will provide long-term capital to early- and growth-stage companies aligned with national industrial priorities. Policymakers see venture financing as a critical tool to support deep-tech innovation, which typically requires heavier upfront investment and longer development cycles compared to consumer internet platforms.
The move marks a continued shift in China’s technology strategy, away from platform-driven consumer growth and toward capital-intensive industrial and scientific sectors. Analysts say the policy could reshape competition in global semiconductor and robotics markets, while also influencing cross-border investment flows into Asia’s technology ecosystem.
