Nucleus Network uses an AI agent to screen trial volunteers

Australian clinical-research organisation Nucleus Network is using an AI agent called Nora to answer early volunteer enquiries and support initial screening. Built with Salesforce Agentforce, the website service asks nine screening questions and helps match prospective volunteers with studies. Human recruiters handle the next stage, and doctors retain the final medical assessment.

The example shows a specific role for an AI agent within a larger process. It concerns the handling of enquiries and preliminary information, rather than transferring medical judgment to software. That distinction is central to understanding both the potential benefit and the limits of the deployment.

    A defined administrative task

Recruitment involves repeated questions about how participation works and whether an enquiry is relevant to an available study. An automated assistant can help structure those early exchanges, provided it works from accurate information and passes cases to the appropriate staff.

A clear task boundary makes evaluation easier. The organisation can examine whether the agent provides consistent answers, gathers the required information and routes an enquiry correctly. These are more concrete measures than a broad claim that AI has transformed recruitment.

The company has reported shorter calls and improved conversion in its recruitment process. Those are operational claims, rather than independently established clinical outcomes. They should be understood within the specific workflow and the organisation’s own reporting.

Data preparation also matters. An agent depends on the information it receives about studies and procedures. If those records are incomplete or out of date, a fluent answer may still be unhelpful. Keeping the underlying information current is an ongoing responsibility, not a one-time step before launch.

Human handover is another part of the design. Staff need enough context to continue an enquiry without asking someone to repeat everything. At the same time, they need to be able to check the information collected and make decisions within their own responsibilities.

    Lessons for local service providers

Bangladeshi organisations exploring AI assistants can apply the same discipline to routine service enquiries. They should identify a limited task, maintain a dependable knowledge base and define when a person takes over. The appropriate limits will depend on the service and the consequences of an error.

Collecting information also brings obligations to protect it. An organisation should know what the agent records, who can access those records and how long they are retained. More information is not automatically better information.

Nucleus Network’s deployment offers a useful example of automation within a supervised process. Its broader lesson is to judge an AI agent by the work it reliably completes and the quality of its handover, while keeping consequential decisions with accountable people.
