Mill’s New and Improved Food Waste Bin: An Eco-Friendly Upgrade

When it comes to kitchen gadgets claiming to be “new and improved,” skepticism is often warranted. However, Mill’s redesigned food waste bin stands out as a genuine improvement.

Key Features of the Mill Food Waste Bin

The new Mill food waste bin retains its primary function: allowing households to dispose of a wide variety of food scraps. With only a few exceptions, such as oyster shells, most organic waste can be effectively processed. The unit grinds and dries this waste to a texture reminiscent of chunky coffee grounds. These grounds can be repurposed in various ways, including:

    • Mixing with garden soil for nutrient enrichment
    • Spreading on lawns to enhance soil health
    • Shipping back to Mill for use as chicken feed by farmers

By utilizing this bin, a household can significantly reduce its carbon footprint, cutting down approximately half a ton of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

    What’s New in the Design?

    Enhanced Speed and Noise Reduction

The earlier version of Mill’s bin, while functional, often lacked the efficiency and quiet operation users desired. The new model, tested over several weeks, consistently completed its cycles overnight by 10 PM, allowing users to wake up to a fully processed bin. Notably, it operates more quietly, ensuring that evening leisure activities are not disrupted.

    User-Centric Design Updates

According to Kristen Virdone, Mill’s head of product, the fundamental goal was to ensure each drying and grinding cycle completed by breakfast. This directive, coupled with comprehensive user data, led to the redesign.

    Visual and Functional Changes

While the exterior may not appear drastically different, subtle enhancements are present. The status lights have been relocated to the base, eliminating the shining through the wood-grain plastic lid, which many users found appealing.

    Innovative Grinding Mechanism

One of the most significant changes involves the augers. The new model features vertical augers instead of horizontal ones. This alteration not only allows for a flat-bottomed bucket, easing the process of waste removal, but also considerably reduces the noise generated during operation. The previous version often produced unsettling sounds reminiscent of a creaky pirate ship—which are now a thing of the past.

Advanced Materials and Machine Learning Technology

The updated bucket is now made entirely of metal, enhancing heat transfer from the heating element and, consequently, reducing drying times. It is lined with a PFAS/PFOA-free ceramic coating to facilitate the easy release of grounds.

The implementation of machine learning also marks a significant upgrade. The new bin uses collected data to optimize cycle durations based on the specific waste being processed, increasing efficiency and effectiveness.

    Sensor Technology

Similar to its predecessor, the new Mill bin is equipped with an array of sensors, but with enhanced capabilities. The sensors can now differentiate between various types of food items based on their weight. Two humidity sensors monitor moisture levels effectively, ensuring the drying process achieves the best outcome.

    Redesigned User Experience

The noise from the fans has been notably reduced, and their strategic placement minimizes escape noise. Despite these improvements, one feature has been changed: the new lid operates mechanically rather than electronically. While the old power-activated lid provided a unique user experience, feedback indicated users preferred the mechanical version for its intuitiveness.

    Placement and Pricing Considerations

For optimal use, the bin must be positioned near a power outlet. Some users may find its design a bit out of place in living areas, suggesting a kitchen location might be more practical.

As for the cost, the bin retails at $360 per year, reflecting a 10% reduction from the previous model. While this may still seem steep compared to curbside composting services, it provides a viable alternative for households that don’t have access to such services. Mill is working to secure municipal subsidies that could eventually reduce this cost.

    Conclusion: A Worthwhile Investment

Mill’s newly redesigned food waste bin is a significant upgrade for anyone looking to manage food waste effectively and sustainably. Although it may not appeal to every household, especially those with existing composting options, it offers an excellent solution for those seeking an eco-friendly method of waste disposal while minimizing the accompanying odors.
