Google Unveils New Profile Page for Movie and TV Reviews

Google Launches Searchable Review Profiles: What You Need to Know

Starting June 24, Google is set to unveil a new feature that will allow users to view all their reviews of movies, TV shows, books, albums, and games on a single profile page. This initiative, which enhances user experience by consolidating feedback, has raised some privacy concerns as these profiles will also be searchable through Google searches, potentially influencing how users are perceived based on their preferences.

A Brief History of Google Reviews

Since the introduction of movie review posting for Indian users in 2017, Google has gradually expanded this feature across global markets. Following an announcement made to TechCrunch last year, Google made review profiles public and searchable in specific regions, starting with the U.S. and India. The latest change expands the visibility of these profiles worldwide.

What You Can Do With Your Profile

Users can easily access any profile to view all the reviews a person has posted. Google has commented that while these profiles are public by default, a toggle option is available to make profiles private. However, this feature was only recently implemented, as noted by SEO consultant Gagan Ghotra.

A Google spokesperson stated, “Profiles make it easier for people to see and manage their reviews of things like movies and TV shows in one place and make reviews more helpful for others." Users have control over their profiles, with options to delete or hide their reviews altogether.

    The Privacy Implications

By default, Google’s profiles are public. If users are unaware of this feature or have missed communications from Google (which might have ended up in their spam folder), the implications could be significant. Google has attempted to notify users about this feature through the Google Profile interface and pop-ups on existing reviews. However, many might overlook these notifications if they don’t regularly check their profile pages.

    Potential Risks

Ghotra points out that searchable profiles could potentially be exploited by employers to assess the opinions of candidates, which may impact hiring decisions. Advertisers could also scrape this data to serve targeted ads, raising further privacy concerns.

    How to Manage Your Profile

If you wish to make your profile private, follow these steps:

    1. Go to profile.google.com.
    2. Click on the three-dot menu next to your profile name.
    3. Select “Profile Options.”
    4. Toggle on the Profile Privacy setting.

Even if you hide your profile, individual reviews will still be visible under the titles of specific movies or shows but will not link back to a comprehensive page with all of your reviews. Notably, reviews on Google Maps are not included in this rollout.

    Conclusion

Google’s launch of searchable review profiles represents a significant shift in how user-generated content is managed. While it offers a convenient way for users to organize and share their opinions, it also raises important questions about privacy and data security. As this feature goes live, users are encouraged to take proactive steps in managing their profiles to ensure their online presence reflects their preferences accurately.
