Bangladesh’s Green Steel Revolution: GPH Ispat Leads with Cutting-Edge Technology

GPH Ispat Sets New Standards in Sustainable Steel Production

The steel industry is notorious for its substantial carbon footprint, but GPH Ispat Limited is revolutionizing this narrative. By adopting the cutting-edge Quantum Electric Arc Furnace (Q-EAF) technology, this Bangladeshi steel manufacturer has made significant strides in reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption in steel production.

    Transformative Technology in Steel Manufacturing

GPH Ispat’s implementation of Q-EAF technology has led to a remarkable decrease in carbon emissions—cutting down by 1.67 tonnes per tonne of steel produced by leveraging recycled scrap metal instead of relying solely on raw iron. This sustainable approach not only protects the environment but also enhances overall energy efficiency, reducing natural gas and electricity use by up to 50%.

Located in Sitakunda, Chattogram, GPH Ispat’s plant boasts an impressive annual production capacity of 10 lakh tonnes. The advent of Q-EAF in 2020 positioned the company as a frontrunner in Asia, promoting eco-friendly steel manufacturing on a global scale.

    Innovative Energy Solutions

    Emissions Reduction through Efficient Processes

The Q-EAF technology not only reduces emissions but also optimizes electricity usage. By allowing billets to transition directly from casting to rolling, GPH Ispat saves up to 2.5 times more gas compared to traditional methods. Additionally, the pre-heating of scrap metal curbs power consumption by 50%, conserving around 26.46 million cubic meters of gas annually.

    Sustainable Product Offerings

GPH Ispat markets its high-strength 600-grade rods, branded as GPH Quantum. Used in major infrastructure projects such as the Padma Bridge and Dhaka Metro Rail, these rods enhance structural integrity, reduce rebar usage by 30%, and improve construction safety—all while also being environmentally friendly.

    Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

    Water Conservation and Reforestation Initiatives

In an effort to mitigate groundwater dependency, GPH Ispat implemented a rainwater harvesting initiative in 2017, constructing a 55-acre reservoir capable of storing 15 lakh cubic meters. This system purifies and reuses water in production processes, supporting local ecosystems through reforestation projects that have introduced over 200,000 trees in the surrounding area.

    Pollution Control Measures

To address air quality concerns, GPH Ispat has installed a state-of-the-art off-gas treatment plant, reducing air emissions to levels as low as 10 micrograms per cubic meter. This initiative not only meets international standards but also aligns with Bangladesh’s efforts to fulfill its Nationally Determined Contribution roadmap for carbon reduction.

    Investment in Renewable Energy

The company’s Sitakunda facility requires about 100 megawatts of electricity per hour, prompting the installation of a 6.05-megawatt solar PV system. This system effectively prevents 89,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, reinforcing GPH Ispat’s commitment to renewable energy solutions.

In a groundbreaking achievement, GPH Ispat became the first Bangladeshi steel manufacturer to participate in Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) trading, netting nearly Tk20 lakh in revenue within the first eight months.

    A Forward-Thinking Future

Founded in 2006, GPH Ispat transitioned to a public limited company in 2009, listing on the Dhaka and Chattogram stock exchanges in 2012. With over 10,000 shareholders, the company is not just poised for growth; it is leading the charge toward a more sustainable steel industry in Bangladesh.

By harnessing innovative technology, investing in renewable energy, and committing to sustainability, GPH Ispat is establishing a new benchmark for environmentally responsible steel production.

With a focus on sustainability, GPH Ispat is redefining the future of the steel industry—proving that environmental responsibility can coincide with industrial growth.
