Bangladesh internet forum puts AI and digital resilience on its agenda

Bangladesh’s annual Internet Governance Forum is scheduled for 15–17 October, with artificial intelligence, digital resilience and meaningful connectivity among the announced themes. The programme, organised by the Bangladesh Internet Governance Forum with BTRC, also lists a preliminary online session for 14 October.

The agenda brings together questions that are often discussed separately: expanding access, protecting personal information and making digital services dependable. Its practical relevance will depend on whether discussion connects those priorities to the everyday experience of people and organisations using the internet.

    An agenda beyond access

Connectivity remains a basic requirement, but a connection alone does not guarantee that a person can benefit from a digital service. Affordability, relevant content, usable interfaces and the skills to complete a task all affect the result. Local-language support can be especially useful when services need to reach people with different levels of experience.

Digital public infrastructure introduces related questions about trust. People need to understand what information a service requires, how it is used and where to seek help if something goes wrong. A service that is difficult to question or correct can create barriers even when its technical infrastructure is available.

The announced AI discussions sit within that wider context. Automated systems may help organisations handle information and routine tasks, but their use also requires decisions about supervision, accountability and data access. Those decisions become more consequential when a service affects people’s rights or important opportunities.

Resilience is another connection between policy and daily use. Reliable digital systems need recovery arrangements as well as measures intended to prevent failure. The ability to communicate an outage, restore service and resolve interrupted transactions can shape public confidence as much as the initial launch.

    What useful discussion should deliver

For Bangladesh, a productive forum can make responsibilities more concrete. Broad agreement that digital services should be inclusive and secure is useful, but implementation also needs clear owners, measurable objectives and a way to assess progress.

Participation matters because different users encounter different obstacles. Businesses, technical specialists, civil society and public institutions can each identify problems that another group may overlook. The value of that exchange increases when it informs specific follow-up work.

The announced programme provides a timely opportunity to examine how Bangladesh’s digital ambitions are experienced in practice. The useful questions concern what should improve, who will act and how users will know whether the change has worked. Those are the measures to watch as the planned discussions move toward implementation.
